Kids NEED less homework!

But exactly how to do that can be a bit challenging. When I was teaching our administrators were continually pushing us to give less homework. They were a bit intimidating and pretty overwhelming to try to implement. But over time I found some great ways to reduce my homework and ended up being much happier with the results.

We can easily spend 2 hours a night on homework. I agree if you do the math students usually have about 5 out of 8 classes that have homework assignments every day.

I agree in fact I am writing an essay about this and a lot of this info will be going to my teacher. As a first year third grade teacher in a high-poverty school, I only give homework on Mondays, and make it due on Fridays. I am amazed that I still have some students not turning it in. But, I also remember the background of some of these students. Even though they have a complete week to do the assignment, do you receive the late assignments?

What grading system do you use for it? Ideas from other teachers are welcomed! I share how I handled missing work here: I learned this from a high school teacher I had 25 years ago and have implemented it into my classroom ever since!!!

So I love it. I am currently struggling in school right now. I have an advanced Math teacher, and I feel as if she she gives enough homework, but all of the homework is nothing like she teaches us. I totally agree wish I can send this to all my teachers! I just got done finishing a 2 hour word search for music in high school and still have more homework for actual important classes. Thanks for the resources people, I am writing an essay on this and honest to god i ave easily hours on homework a night, and on top of that I have Track practice until 4: It sucks doing homework at 8: This is not and is not intended to be a research article.

This is purely an opinion and advice piece. It is intended to give advice to teachers, not to be used as a formal source in a research article. Thanks for pointing that out. Please see author bio at end of the article — or our about page here: Writing a paper about this for my Lang Arts class. Thanks for the source. I as a student am writing an essay on this topic and your article proved to be very useful and my math teachers solution is she allows us to work in groups on homework.

I like it very much. Complete your Assignment on time is very essential for your great grades and results. Or at least some of us do. And, unfortunately, we often give way too much homework. Students can be overwhelmed if the homework is too long. The tough thing about homework is that the time it takes students to complete it is immensely different. What takes a sharp kid minutes can take a struggling kid 45 minutes or even an hour.

The sheer volume of work is incredibly intimidating and often causes him to give up before he even tries. When you limit the quantity, you can expect more quality. Because family time is valuable. If we truly want our students to have strong families, then we need to not take up all their family time with homework. There are definitely families out there who want to relax together in the evening but simply cannot do so because the kids are entrenched with homework. Less homework means less tracking and grading for you.

If this were the only reason for giving less homework, then it would not be a very good one. But as it stands, there are lots of great reasons to give less homework, and this one is just a little perk for us teachers.

Here are a few things that helped me reduce my homework. I hope they can help you, too. So before you assign anything, ask yourself what the point is of the assignment. Assign as few problems or questions as possible. Instead of assigning all the problems in the book — or even half of them, I started to just assign 6 or 7 problems per section. In class you do lots of non-stop work.

Then you go home and do the same thing for 5 days. All that work could easily put you under pressure which makes you do your homework all wrong and you don't notice until you get to school. All that pressure could also fail you on a test. When your tying to do your homework your also studying for a test. With all the sports you have you could only have about one and a half hours to study and do your homework.

If your in the high grades like high school, one and a half hours is defiantly not enough to finish your homework and study for a test. These are my reasons why kids shouldn't have as much homework to do. Another reason school days should end earlier is there would be less homework because students have less classes. Students normally have seven hours then come home for another hour of homework. A shorter school day would alleviate that feeling of being overwhelmed.

We all know that shorter school days equal less homework and less homework equals less stress for students. When kids have so much homework they get more anxiety any that could lead to health issues. So yes i agree that kids should have less homework. Kids sometimes cry because they have so much anxiety.

I agree but sometimes it is up to the student as well. I am an allstar cheerleader and im in track, and i have NO time!!! I have 5 core classes and i get about 1 hour of homework for each core class most days!!! We kids now days have allot of stuff to do. By the time we got home the day is almost over and we have sports and band to do.

And if we have more homework we don't have anytime to do stuff outside or hangout with your friends and family's. I'm a fifth grade student and I'm usually staying up intill like 10 PM doing homework and I get home 3: That's seven hours of homework right there.

I'm sick of it 2 hours is enough homework for one night some websites say you shouldn't only have 45 minutes of homework a day. I think that kids should have less homework because its helps kids have less stress because it will help them have a better achievement in school and it will help them to know more about there life style and what realy happens in the out world so when it comes time for them to go to the out world they are ready for whats going to happen.

One benifit of homework is that it teaches responsibility. It also helps because it reviews what the child learned In school. It also frees up class time instead of doing it in class. If we didn't have homework, fellow students, we would not do well on the MCAS.

Look, I'm a student but even with all the time taking up, less sleep and no free time I believe we should have more. This stuff actually helps you learn. We must know how to do this in order to get a job I think kids don't need less homework because that is just silly.

Kids need to learn a lot about things. In the school that I teach in kindergartener's have homework except it's only writing numbers and letters. The kids in 1st through 4th grade, only have 1 page of math and they have to read for 30 minutes. Way too much homework! I may be spending up too 3 hours of homework everyday and I have no time to relax and enjoy life.

Teachers say that homework helps you remember your work but when i do too much, I just forget it all. Also, since I do sport and music, I have practice before and after school! Homework is an unnecessary. Students spend each day at school for about seven hours.

I mean if I was a teacher I wouldn't want to go home with work outside of my job time at home is for the people such as students and teachers to spend quality time with there family.
